The Monsters of The Midway are Back!

We are halfway through the NFL Preseason and all of the talk out of Chicago is on Caleb Williams and the offense. Rightfully so. Caleb Williams has looked fantastic in his first two career preseason games. So good that he had X going crazy on Saturday after his across-the-body dime to fellow rookie Rome Odunze for a big play.

However, when you look at the other side of the ball, it seems like the Monsters of the Midway are back.

Thus far, The Bears defense in training camp and preseason has been phenomenal. In fact, over the last 9 quarters of play, they haven’t allowed a touchdown. Starting with the last quarter of the Hall of Fame game, into the Buffalo game where the defense held the Bills to just 6 points, and then into this weekend where the defense held the Bengals to just 3 points, leading the way to a 27-3 victory.

The defense was led by Kyler Gordon, who was all over the field.

Gordon said after the game,

“It’s an exciting feeling,” Gordon said of hearing the nickel blitz play call. “Obviously, you want to be calm, be a master of disguise. So that’s what was going through my head — surprise them, don’t give it away, and sure enough the sack came.” (Quote from ChicagoBears.com)

The Bears are poised to have a big season on defense led by Gordon and Pro Bowlers Jaylon Johnson and Montez Sweat. In addition to those guys the Bears have have playmakers on all three levels of the defense. Sweat and Gervon Dexter on the defensive line. Tremaine Edmunds and TJ Edwards up the middle, and Johnson, Gordon, Jaquan Brisker, Tyrique Stevenson, and veteran safety Kevin Byard in the secondary. Loaded.

But it’s not just the big names. As seen in this week’s preseason game, this defense is deep and versatile.

This week the defense has a tough test as the Bears travel to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs on Thursday Night.
